The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has broadened its methanol poisoning warnings to cover eight more countries visited by British nationals, adding to existing advice for destinations including Fiji.
Newly added countries with methanol poisoning alerts are Ecuador, Kenya, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Uganda, and Russia.
The existing warnings apply to places where methanol poisoning incidents have already affected British travellers: Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, Costa Rica, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Fiji.
The FCDO warns travellers to buy sealed drinks from licensed venues, avoid homemade alcohol and suspicious pre-mixed drinks and be cautious of drinks served in buckets or jugs
The FCDO’s expanded warnings follow consultations with Parliamentarians, industry experts, and victims’ families, including campaigns driven by those affected in Fiji.
British nationals are urged to act promptly if symptoms appear, seeking urgent medical help.
