BRIEFLY

Strong winds

BY evening, the temperature had dropped and the winds picked up. Fans were not deterred however and stayed on until the last matches. While majority came prepared for the weather, there were some who seemed unaffected, clad in briefs, mini shorts , vests and even kilts. Beauty is pain!

7s fun

SEVENS rugby is all about having fun. And it’s not only the spectators who have fun. Players too, like the USA women’s side some of whom were dancing to the music during an injury break during their match against Canada yesterday.

Many Fijians

THERE are so many Fijians at the Sam Boyd Stadium that it feels like you are at home. Almost every 10 metres you will meet one. And all around the stadium, you can see the noble banner blue and of course banners. One read “Toso Viti Toso, Vuna, Taveuni”, another read “Cautata”.

Fans chant

WE’VE heard so many cheers and chants for Fiji. Such as “Go Fiji Go” or “Toso Viti Toso”. How about “me tavuteke”, which means to fry in the iTaukei language. Some Fijian fans were heard chanting that and one would do the Zena war cry every time Fiji scored.

Roti for sale

YES, there is also Fijian curry and roti sold at the stadium. One stall at the USA 7s fan festival was selling this as well as “Fijian style fish and chips”. And they were making good money with almost all Fijians flocking to buy food there. You can take a Fijian out of Fiji but you cannot certainly take Fiji out of a Fijiana

Media booth

AFTER every match, team officials go to the media booth where they can download matches to analyse. Referees analyse videos as well apparently to see how they performed during a match. One said they almost train as hard as the players as they need to be very fit and quick on their feet.
