The strong diplomatic partnership between Fiji and Japan, is framed through the experiences of Fijian public servants studying in Japan under the Japan Development Scholarship (JDS).

The journey from Fiji to the International University of Japan (IUJ) in snowy Minamiuonuma represents not just a geographical transition but a deep professional and cultural transformation.

It was refreshing to shift from frontline public service roles to academic inquiry, gaining new analytical skills in governance, evidence-based policymaking, and international development.

Our immersion into Japanese culture—particularly values such as Kaizen (continuous improvement) and Omotenashi (hospitality)—has shaped our understanding of discipline, empathy, and efficiency.

The contrast between Fiji’s relaxed pace and Japan’s precision-oriented lifestyle further deepened their appreciation of resilience and productivity.

IUJ’s multicultural environment, hosting students from over fifty countries, has expanded our global outlook and strengthened regional cooperation networks. We are committed to applying Japanese efficiency and people-centered governance to improve Fiji’s public sector upon returning home. We deeply acknowledge Japan’s investment through JDS as more than an academic opportunity—rather, a symbol of shared prosperity and enduring friendship between the two countries.
