The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not disclosed the total cost of repairing erosion damage at the Labasa Bridge, where urgent maintenance works are under way to prevent sinkholes from forming.
The FRA confirmed that maintenance is being carried out at the courthouse and hospital end of the bridge, focusing on rip-rap protection to strengthen the riverbanks.
The work involves placing large boulders beneath the bridge to fill voids that have developed under the bridge abutment.
“This includes filling voids beneath the bridge abutment with boulders.”
FRA said the works were being carried out only during low tide hours and would not disrupt traffic to and from Labasa Town.
As a safety precaution, the pedestrian walkway near the affected area has been barricaded.
The maintenance work is expected to take about two months to complete, weather permitting. FRA has urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution while using the bridge.
“We kindly urge all road users to exercise caution and thank the public for their understanding and cooperation while these essential works are carried out.”
