For the past 16 years, villagers in Nakorovou, Tailevu, have been pleading with the government to raise a bridge that gets flooded during heavy rain.
And once again yesterday, the bridge was closed off because of flooding associated with a tropical storm affecting the country.
Setefano Rasila, a resident, said inclement weather always meant students missing school and villagers unable to get to work.
He also said it was a serious issue “for those who need to get to hospital for medical treatment”.
“We have about 87 villagers who use the bridge,” he said.
Mr Rasila said requests were made to the previous administration but to no avail.
“And we also plead to the current administration to look into our issue.
“Nobody understands the struggles we face.
“We have two villages — Navunisole and Nakorovou — that get cut off when this bridge gets flooded.”
