MOTORISTS and businesses on Vanua Levu will have to wait longer for clarity on the planned closure of the Labasa Bridge, as authorities have yet to confirm a timeline for repair works.

Acting Commissioner Northern Apolosi Lewaqai said no decision had been finalised on when the existing bridge would be temporarily closed to allow repair works to begin.

He said the process remained ongoing, with the Fiji Roads Authority undertaking extensive groundwork before any final call is made.

“The process remains ongoing, with the Fiji Roads Authority currently undertaking all necessary procedural requirements, including technical assessments, planning, stakeholder consultations, and logistical coordination,” he said.

Mr Lewaqai said these steps were essential to ensure the repairs are carried out safely and efficiently, while minimising disruption to the public and economic activity.

“These due processes are critical to ensure that the repair works are conducted efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to the public and businesses in the area.”

The Labasa Bridge is a vital link for daily commuters, businesses, and transport services on Vanua Levu, making any closure a matter of significant public concern.

Mr Lewaqai said alternative arrangements were also being explored to reduce the impact once the bridge is eventually closed.

“Temporary bypass sites have been identified, and consultations and detailed assessments are currently being undertaken by the Fiji Roads Authority to determine their suitability, safety, and effectiveness in maintaining traffic flow.”

He added that further updates, including the proposed closure timeline and alternative traffic arrangements, would be communicated once all approvals and preparations are finalised.
