The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team is determined to improve discipline and execution ahead of the Vancouver 7s as they push to maintain their lead in the HSBC SEVENS Series.
Halfback Pilipo Bukayaro said the team has reflected on their performance in Perth and is working hard to address areas that need improvement.
“We learned a lot of our weaknesses from the Perth 7s tournament,” he said.
“Our target to win the series still remains despite our results last tournament.”
Discipline has been one of the main areas of focus in training, as the team looks to cut down on unnecessary penalties and errors that cost them crucial moments in Perth.
“We are working on our defense and more importantly our discipline because this affected us in Perth,” Bukayaro said.
The team has also identified issues with their execution, particularly in capitalising on scoring opportunities.
“We trust in the process of our training, now we are working on some little things we did not showcase on the field like our careless passing,” Bukayaro said.
“Most of our matches in Perth, we did not make use of the opportunities we had.”
He acknowledged that wasted chances played a significant role in their losses and improving their finishing will be a priority heading into Vancouver.
“We had given away most of our opportunities, which made us lose the game,” he said.
“So, we will try to improve on that and make use of our opportunities heading to Vancouver.”
With the Vancouver 7s taking place next week, Bukayaro says the team remains united in their pursuit of the 7s series title.
“We are not backing down as we all have one common goal to achieve when the 7s series wraps up this year,” he said.
Fiji will look to apply the lessons learned from Perth as they prepare for Vancouver.
Meanwhile the Vancouver 7s will kick start next Saturday.
