Boxing Fiji appoints Ratu as coach to Pacific Games

PUNCHES will be galore and the killer instincts a notch up as boxers try to squeeze in for the limited spots available on the national boxing team to the Pacific Games.

And Pauliasi Ratu was yesterday appointed coach to train the boxers before the start of the Pacific Game in July.

To get a national squad, a trial will be held this evening at the Hyundai Fitness Centre.

Ratu said given the time frame towards the game, the selection committee was not looking for a big number to take.

He said there could be at least four male boxers but the numbers depended on the selection committee.

He confirmed unlike the space allocated for the three female boxers from Fiji, they will not be taking any.

“I believe in taking boxers who will not be there just to make up the numbers, but win medal also,” Ratu said.

“I know amateur boxers have been training and the trials will show which boxer has the fitness level and build him for a shot at the medal.”

The FABA Selection Justification Committee appointed Ratu, an AIBA accredited coach to train the boxers.

Boxing Fiji secretary Asinate Nanovo confirmed clubs not currently affiliated with the national federation could register prior to the trials.

She said only boxers and clubs affiliated to Boxing Fiji will be permitted to participate in the trials with an affiliation fee of $20.

The weigh-in starts at 9am at the Hyundai Fitness Centre with the fights scheduled to start at 5pm.
