Bowling starts trials for world championship

A total of 23 players turned up for Bowls Fiji’s trials at the Nadi Sports & Social Club yesterday.

The players were all vying for a spot in the national team for the 2016 World Bowls Championship in New Zealand.

Ten players were part of the women’s training squad while 13 were part of the men’s training squad.

At the world championships, the women will participate in the singles, triples and fours disciplines while the men will participate in the pairs and fours disciplines.

Fiji men’s team manager Curtis Mar said the players tested their skills against each other yesterday.

He said players would work on the various drills with national coach Robbie Dobbins today.

“The training squad will be trimmed down after this weekend,” Mar said.

“There will be back to back weekend trials. Next week the women’s squad will be reduced to eight players while the men’s will have ten.

“The aim is to build the best combinations over the next few months.”

The world championship will be held in Christchurch from November 29-December 11.
