SEVERAL standout players emerged following the conclusion of day one at the 50th Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens yesterday, signalling the rise of potential international stars for the national team.

Among these rising talents is Ro Mocelutu Macanawai, captain of the Loloma Heights U18-20 grassroots team, who delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the competition.

The Veivatuloa in Namosi villager has demonstrated exceptional promise, excelling in both the physical and technical facets of the game.

At just 20-years-old, the forward has made a habit of breaking through defensive lines, aided by a precise offloading game that rarely misses its target.

His explosive speed continues to confound numerous opponents, yet it is his rugby intelligence and leadership that remain his most enduring qualities.

Since claiming the Dean’s U19 trophy for Lami High School two years ago, his rugby journey has been far from straightforward.

“Previously I was with the Fiji Sports Council grass roots team. Unfortunately the program was disbanded but I’m really grateful for the opportunity given to me by the Loloma Heights team to continue my rugby journey,” he explained.

He credits his new team with helping him elevate his game, instilling the confidence needed to one day join the national squad.

“The team has set really high standards for us players, their set up and the leadership has been the best I’ve ever come across and I thank the owners for bringing me to their club,” he added.

Macanawai also aspires to light up the international sevens scene, following in the footsteps of his idol, Kaminieli Rasaku. Asked about the possibility of becoming the next international talent to emerge from the Marist Sevens, he replied, “With God nothing is impossible, I always give him back all the glory for his providence in my life every day and the rugby talent he has instilled in me.”

If Macanawai maintains his outstanding form throughout the tournament, he could well become the next Fijian rugby star destined to set the rugby world alight.

The tournament continues today at the national stadium, Bidesi and Buck hurst Parks. The men’s matches will also be played.
