The Fiji Corrections Service’s manpower will be boosted by 72 new officers who successfully completed a rigorous three-month recruitment course.

Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Siromi Turaga said the new officers had reaped the rewards of hard work, determination and patience.

He also commended 18 female officers who completed the training and courses, saying it demonstrated the “inclusiveness approach of the Government in recognising the true value of women in our society”.

He reminded them their role included upholding justice and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of inmates.

Mr Turaga said they were responsible for facilitating the rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates into society.

“It’s not your duty to impose further punishment — that has already been done by the court,” he said.

“Your duty is to ensure that one day they’ll be released and be ready to be integrated into the community.”
