The New Zealand national 7s side is looking for another successful outing at the second leg of the Fiji Airways Mini International Women’s 7s tournament at Churchill Park in Lautoka this week.

The side won the first leg that was held at Albert Park in Suva last week.

Head coach Cory Sweeney said they wanted to finish strong at the end of day two.

The Black Ferns lost to France 19-26 and beat Australia 10-7 and the Fijiana 19-5 on day two but managed to win all their matches on the first day of the tournament.

“Day one we played quite well and had some patches,” he said.

“And then we lost to France. So, we took a bit of a few learning’s out of that.

“We wanted to make sure that we turned up and looked after our rucks against Fiji.

“Making their (Fijiana) offload hard and then play with the skill set that the girls have.

“It was a close fought game for the final and really good.”

Sweeney said he hoped Fiji would host more tournaments in future.

“I always think if you want to play sevens then you got to go to Fiji.

“Fijians love 7s and they are amazing at it.

“I would be a huge supporter of an international 7s rugby tournament in Fiji.

“We came last year and played in Lautoka, and it had set up our year really well.

“And this year we are in Suva.

“I think it’s an awesome start for the World Sevens Series.

“And if we can get a tournament in between World Series events as well then that would be great.”

The two-day tournament begins on Friday.
