Team Fiji ended Day 6 of the Commonwealth Games on a high note in the swimming competition at Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham, England.
The men’s swimming quartet of Hansel McCaig, Epeli Rabua, Temafa Yalimaiwai and David Young finished sixth in the final of the 4x100m medley relay yesterday morning.
McCaig got the race started for Fiji and held onto sixth position in the first 100 metres.
Epeli Rabua was next and touched the wall in seventh place for Temafa Yalimaiwai to dive in.
David Young anchored the team and moved one place up to finish sixth.
The side swam a time of 3 minutes 55.31 seconds – 23.51s behind first-placed England.
Australia and Scotland came second and third, respectively.
The team finished fourth in its heats in a time of 3 minutes 57.43s to qualify for the final.
It was high fives all around for Team Fiji as they were able to qualify for two finals at this year’s competition.
Chef de mission Sale Sorovaki said it was a great achievement by the young swimmers.
“Despite not having won any medals, I think these young athletes have performed beyond our expectations. We have many young athletes and they definitely have a bright future in the sport,” Sorovaki said.
