Political parties and election candidates could receive unlimited donations under proposed changes contained in the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) (Amendment) Bill 2026.
Clause 8 of the Bill proposes amending section 22 of the existing Act by removing the current limit on donations that may be received by a political party or candidate.
The proposed amendment would also allow non-Fiji citizens and former Fiji citizens to make donations to political parties and candidates.
Under the proposed changes, however, those donors would be required to declare their donations to the Registrar within 60 days after polling day.
The Registrar would then be required to publish the declaration on the Registrar’s website.
The amendment specifically proposes deleting several subsections of section 22 and changing the wording in subsection (3) from “shall not” to “may”.
It would also insert a requirement that a person making such a donation declare it to the Registrar within the prescribed 60-day period.
The Bill’s explanatory note states that Clause 8 removes both the donation limit and the prohibition on donations from non-Fiji citizens and former Fiji citizens.
The proposed changes represent a significant shift in Fiji’s political financing framework, while retaining a disclosure requirement for donations covered by the amended provision.
The Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) (Amendment) Bill 2026 was tabled in Parliament as part of wider proposed reforms to Fiji’s electoral laws.
