Spouses and children of eligible diplomats are set to benefit under the proposed Passports (Amendment) Bill 2026, which expands access to diplomatic passports beyond principal office holders.

The Bill, tabled in Parliament on Friday last week, confirms that individuals serving as heads of Fiji missions or members of diplomatic staff will continue to qualify for diplomatic passports, but now explicitly extends eligibility to their immediate families.

“The spouse or child of a person… is also eligible for a Diplomatic Passport,” the legislation states, providing automatic entitlement for families of accredited diplomatic staff.

In cases involving other State representatives, the Bill allows spouses and children to be granted diplomatic passports subject to Cabinet approval, introducing a level of oversight for extended eligibility.

The Bill also maintains that all diplomatic passport applications must be endorsed by the ministry responsible for foreign affairs, ensuring co-ordination between immigration and diplomatic channels.

The reforms form part of a broader update to Fiji’s travel document laws.
