THE Government of Japan’s footprint in Fiji’s national development continues to expand, with several multi-million dollar infrastructure projects in the pipeline.

During the ground-breaking ceremony of the $27million Regional Training Centre (RTC) and Regional Instrument Centre (RIC) on Friday, Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the breadth of Japanese assistance, ranging from bridge construction to maritime disaster response.

Ro Filipe confirmed that work was progressing on the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge through a partnership between Fiji and Japan, while the Government was also looking toward a more efficient maritime response.

“We also have discussions on a multi-purpose ship,” he said.

“This is not only the ministry, but also the Government of Fiji, especially in more efficient, effective disaster response in our maritime islands.”

Furthermore, Japan is assisting in the re-strengthening of the Public Works Department (PWD) through the procurement of essential machinery.

“At the moment, the Government of Japan is working on the procurement and acquisition of roads equipment for the Public Works Department.

“This will assist us greatly in on-time deliveries of maritime and rural roads maintenance.”

Ro Filipe said technical reports from a recent rural roads feasibility assessment were being reviewed to realise key maintenance elements.

In addition to infrastructure, the partnership extends to human resources and sustainable energy.

“On capacity building, which is ongoing with the Government of Japan, not only through scholarships, but direct ministry or Fiji Government staff with the Government of Japan.”

Ro Filipe commended the Ambassador of Japan, Hiroshi Tajima, and JICA representatives, noting that these projects aligned with Sustainable Development Goals regarding climate change and resilient communities.
