It will be a dynamic year ahead for Fiji Amateur Boxing as they set their sights on enhancing the growth and performance of their boxers.
Coach Cameron Todd has outlined the schedule, with the first competition slated for the 14th and 28th of February.
This event will play a crucial role in finalising the Commonwealth team, with several boxers expected to compete for a spot.
Todd mentioned in March, there are plans to send a select group of athletes to Thailand for the under-19 Futures event.
This tournament serves as a qualifying platform for the Youth Olympics scheduled for November.
Funding has been secured for this initiative, paving the way for the potential participation of Fijian boxers.
In April, Fiji Amateur Boxing is aiming to host a two-day event featuring Samoa and New Zealand.
The FMF Gymnasium is being considered as the venue for this anticipated competition.
“It will be a very busy year for Fiji Amateur Boxing, also this year is where we will be looking at prospective boxers forming a squad for the Pacific Games next year in Tahiti, that will be a qualifying event for the 2028 Olympics,” said Todd.
“Reflecting on the past year, was a busy year for us, we had international Colorado, with a new team, we had a boxer, who finished fifth place there.
“We also had a successful Tri-nations, with countries like Australia and Samoa, which was held at the FMF Gymnasium which was a big competition.
“We also have a strong result in the Australian Golden Gloves, winning couple of gold medals, and couple of silvers from some of our top boxers.”
He adds the overarching goal for this year is to continue the upward trajectory of performance for the national representatives.
Transitioning from a junior boxer to the Commonwealth Games involves a lengthy process, and the emphasis is on providing young boxers with ample exposure to enhance their skills and knowledge of the sport.
Fiji Amateur Boxing expresses gratitude to all boxers for their unwavering dedication and contributions to the sport.
The team is optimistic about the prospects in 2026 and is committed to striving for greater success.
