UNRANKED Vienna Kumar upset number two seed Florence Wasko of American Samoa during the Tattslotto Fiji Open Tennis Championship at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club in Nadi yesterday.

The Natabua High School Year 11 student won her girls open singles quarter-final fixture 6-0, 7-5. It was a big win for the youngster against Wasko who is part of the American Samoa team for the upcoming Pacific Games.

Top seed and national rep Annie Shannon won her quarter-final fixture easily beating Ruby Coffin 6-1, 6-1.

Mulan Kamoe won her match beating Victory Leavai of Samoa 6-1, 6-3.

Mavin So’onalole is the player to beat in the men’s open singles category.

So’onalole, the number one seed, was in devastating form crushing Junior Benjamin of the Solomon Islands 6-0, 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

In the other quarter-final matches, Daneric Hazelman defeated Ian Honila 7-5, 6-0, Thomas Leiniker beat Devashkar Reddy 6-3, 6-4 while William O’Connell downed Luke Paeni 7-5, 6-4.

Tennis Fiji president Richard Breen said a few overseas coaches who were in the country had offered to help the national side in preparation for the Pacific Games.

The tournament continues today.
