Big plans for 9s tourney

THE University of the South Pacific Islanders rugby league team is planning to host the nines tournament annually as the tournament was first played at Bidesi Grounds in Suva yesterday.

The competition saw 12 teams competing for the top prizemoney.

The USP Islanders 9s tournament competition chairman Aseri Uluinavucu said they had plans in the pipeline.

“The purpose of the tournament is to help expose the USP students who are also the members of the Islanders rugby league team in preparing them for the season and raise finance for the club,” he said.

“Tournament is organised by the students themselves with the support from the Fiji National Rugby League office. We normally go to them for consultations and they provide us with the ideas.”

The Fiji Residents along with Davuilevu Knights, Cunnigham Rabbitohs. Kinoya Sea Eagles and Makoi Bulldogs were some of the teams competing in the tournament for the $1000 prizemoney on offer.

“Teams from Suva to Nausori corridor are taking part so this is just the beginning and we have plans to make it an annual event,” he said.

“We want to make it a national competition.

“There are a few sponsors but the organising and raising of funds are done by the students and management of the team. I thank the supporters who came to watch the tournament.”
