Parents and adult guardians are reminded to be vigilant about their children’s activities and strictly monitor who they spend their time with.

The call from police follows concerns of the involvement of juveniles in drug-related activities, and the potential to be used as peddlers.

Fiji Police Force Assistant Commissioner Operations Livai Driu said as their focus intensified on known drug suppliers and distributors, they were also looking at juveniles because they “could be targeted to sell drugs as they would be considered unlikely suspects”.

He said recent arrests indicated a shift in peddling areas to popular spots frequented by juveniles and youths.

“… The arrests for unlawful possession of illicit drugs involving children are highly linked to children being targeted by suppliers,” ACP Driu said.

He said while some children may be lured by the opportunity to earn money, the message that needed to be reiterated was the long term consequences on their education and future.

He also assured members of the public that concerted efforts were being made throughout the five policing divisions to curb drug-related activities.
