POLICE have called on bus drivers to take responsibility of the behaviour of their passengers.
The warning from police was issued after a few buses were stopped last week because students were seen jumping, shouting and hoisting flags from the buses.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said it was dangerous for students to travel in such a manner. “The drivers too have some form of responsibility because if they see it happening, they shouldn’t be encouraging it, they can stop the bus, they can tell the students to stop,” she said.
“If not, come to the nearest police station so we can warn the students because it is a very dangerous habit, not only for the students themselves but for other road users because you are flying the flags.
“In the past, we had to confiscate flags and we have to warn students and this will be something that we will do through our community policing.
“We will be visiting the schools because usually as a buildup to the secondary schools athletics games, there are usually brawls and fights, and the school rivalries.
“So this is all part of our community policing outreach, just for proactive means.”
Ms Naisoro also requested drivers and parents to speak to their children as they would be fully aware of these habits.
“They have to be mindful of the fact they are putting themselves in danger because you never know, a passing vehicle could come grab the flag and they get hurt. And plus, they have to be considerate as well, if not it will get to the point where we’ll cease the flags.”
