OCEANIA Rugby confirmed that the qualifications spots for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Rugby Sevens World Cup are up for grabs for non core Oceania teams.
They have confirmed in a media release statement, that the highest placed men’s team at the end of the finals on day two of the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships would be gaining a spot to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2018 Rugby World Cup 7s and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Oceania Rugby Media Officer Sarah Walker said Oceania 1 would be joining pre-qualified teams of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa in the Commonwealth Games.
“Oceania 1′ joining pre-qualified teams of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa while Oceania 2 will be determined at the 2017 South Pacific Mini Games, Port Villa, December 2017,” Walker said in the statement. She said Oceania 1 would then be joining core series teams Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa in the HSBC World Sevens Series as the 16th team at the Sydney and the Hamilton 7s next year. Walker added Oceania 1 would also be competing in the 2019 HSBC series qualifier in Hong Kong in April, 2018.
“The second highest placed men’s team at the end of the final on day 2 excluding pre-qualified and/or core teams will gain qualification spot in the men’s series 2017/18.”
