Basic road rules

PAGE 4 of FT on Saturday, December 5 quotes an article titled “Call for children to be taught basic road safety rules at home”.

LTA urges parents to teach their children the international law for crossing roads — “Think, stop, listen and look left then right” before crossing the road.

This advice may be acceptable in those countries whose drivers drive on the right side of the road but is totally wrong where it relates to Fiji and other nearby countries such as New Zealand and Australia.

Drivers here drive on the left side of the road.

Instruction given to our children should be, “Think, stop, look right, look left and look right again” and if all clear proceed with crossing the road. Is it any wonder why our road death toll continues at a high level when our road authority can’t get basic instructions correct?
