HURRICANES head coach Clark Laidlaw has backed young flyhalf Callum Harkin to steer the side confidently when they face the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua today.
Harkin will wear the No.10 jersey and run out in Fiji for the first time an experience Laidlaw believes the playmaker is ready for.
“We’ve got enough confidence in him to start the game there,” Laidlaw said.
“We see this as a great opportunity for him.”
For Harkin, the trip to Fiji presents both excitement and uncertainty. The talented first five admits the conditions will be a major factor, with humid and warm weather expected to test the visitors.
“I’ve never been to Fiji, we’re preparing for all scenarios and possibilities.”
Laidlaw expects a different challenge against a Drua side known for their flair, physicality and home-ground energy. But the Hurricanes mentor insists his side will focus on what they can control.
“It’s about keeping the team in the right areas of the field and focusing on what’s in front of us,” he said.
“Each week brings new challenges, and this is an exciting one. We’re taking it week by week.”
The Hurricanes will be led by experienced All Black Jordie Barrett, who captains a side blending youth and experience for the tough away assignment.
Laidlaw believes composure and discipline will be key in handling both the Drua and the demanding conditions.
With the atmosphere expected to be electric and the climate unforgiving, the Hurricanes know they face one of the competition’s most unique challenges a true test of control, adaptability and nerve.
