THE Baravi Legion rugby team will make its first appearance at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s today.

With no established rugby stars, the young side is embracing the challenge with confidence, unity, and a belief that raw talent can speak louder than reputation.

The Baravi Legion squad is made up entirely of emerging players from the coastal side of Nadroga including villages such as Tagaqe, Namada, Vatukarasa and Malevu — the communities that have long lived and breathed rugby.

For many of these players, this Savusavu 7s will be their first taste of high-level tournament rugby, an opportunity to test themselves against more experienced and well-known teams.

Despite their newcomer status, team manager Iliesa Domonakibau said that the management has full faith in the squad.

“We believe in our boys, they may not be big names, but they have heart, discipline, and the hunger to prove themselves. This tournament is a chance for them to show their talents on the field,” Mr Domonakibau said.

The Baravi Legion team has focused its preparation on fitness, teamwork, and sticking to simple but effective rugby.

Mr Domonakibau added that the team’s participation reflects a broader vision beyond results on the scoreboard.

“This team was formed to give young men direction,” Domonakibau said.

“Rugby keeps the boys focused, disciplined, and away from drugs. By competing at this year’s Savusavu 7s, we are showing that there are better paths for our youth.”

Team captain Saimoni Kunagone shared that despite being a newborn team, his team are eager to showcase their raw talent against more experienced teams at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s.

The young side will come up against seasoned and battle-hardened teams Army Green, LCW Lavena Reds, and Solove Rugby — a daunting task for a team competing at this level for the first time.

However, Mr Domonakibau remains confident that his players are ready for the challenge.

“We know the pool is very tough, but our boys are not afraid. This is where they will learn, grow, and show what they are capable of. We believe in their talent and their discipline,” Mr Domonakibau said.

The three-day tournament kicks off today and will end on Saturday at Ratu Ganilau park.
