AS someone many young athletes look up to, former Olympian Banuve Tabakaucoro says giving back to athletics is one of the most fulfilling things he’s ever done.
The Pacific sprinter and record 100m record holder, who retired in 2023 after representing Fiji for 18 years, has founded the Bullet Academy Athletics Club to help develop the next generation of champions.
“I just wanted to share my knowledge and guide the young and upcoming athletes,” he said.
“I also wanted to own and do things my way. Starting up this club, I have the freedom to execute my plans freely.”
The club is already working with around 20 athletes, including primary school students preparing for the upcoming Suva Zone meets.
“My journey has been a long and fruitful one. I’ve learned so much as an athlete, travelled and competed in many places all over the world and I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to experience it all.”
Now with the academy based in Suva, Tabakaucoro leads the sessions, sometimes taking the young athletes down to the beach for training.
He said any child who is willing to learn and put in the time and effort is welcome to join.
“I’ll be more than willing to help them on their journey, but the child must want it themselves first.”
When asked about the kind of athletes he hopes to develop, he said it’s not just about sport.
“For my athletes to represent Fiji one day in any sport they choose whether it’s athletics, rugby, netball or swimming, I want my athletes to look beyond and shoot for the stars.”
Tabakaucoro said success for Bullet Academy is simple.
“When our athletes are learning and enjoying themselves and also executing their races the way I’ve taught them to. Most importantly, if the athletes are improving, then we’re doing something right. Ultimately, I want my athletes to represent Fiji.”
