The ANZ Bank has advised customers to be vigilant this Christmas season of fraud and scammers.

According to ANZ chief risk officer for Pacific, Brent Turner, regardless of a person’s age, background or income, it’s important to know how to identify and protect yourself from scams.

“Scammers are known to prey on people’s generosity and vulnerabilities during the Christmas holiday period,” he said.

“This includes clicking on digital e-cards from someone you don’t know, phishing emails promising Christmas sales, fake travel and holiday deals across social media and online donations to fake charities.

“Customers should contact ANZ if they notice any unusual activity on their bank cards or accounts. We’re here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

ANZ customers could use BankMail through their ANZ Internet Banking or ANZ Pacific App to securely send and receive messages from ANZ, call the ANZ Contact Centre or visit their nearest branch according to a statement from the bank.

“It’s important to remember your digital personal information is just as valuable to a scammer as your money, so always be careful about the information you share online,” added Mr Turner.

He said ANZ would never send customers an email asking for their account details, financial details, or their log in details for ANZ Internet Banking or the ANZ Pacific App.

Mr Turner added if something doesn’t seem right, or was unexpected, question it.

Phishing and remote access scams were stated to be the common issues which customers needed to look out for.
