Bainimarama sentencing set for October 14

Former Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama has been found guilty of making an unwarranted demand with menace.

Between 21 May and 18 August 2021, he threatened Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu to terminate Sergeant Penieli Ratei and Constable Tomasi Naulu, warning he would have to resign if he failed to comply.

Justice Thushara Rajasinghe delivered the verdict at the Suva High Court today.

Former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho was acquitted of two counts of abuse of office.

Sentencing submissions for Mr Bainimarama are scheduled for 9 October, with sentencing on 14 October 2025.

The Office of the Public Prosecutions said it will decide in due course if an appeal will be filed  on Mr Qiliho’s acquittal.
