Five police officers charged for their alleged involvement in an assault and extortion case against a Nasinu businessman were bailed for $1000 each.
Elizabeth Sautu, Semiji Druguilagi Puamau, Koroi Lakokilepanoni, Bernard Vukivuki, and Timoci Belo appeared before Magistrate Krishan Prasad at the Nasinu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The five are each charged with one count of assault. Four of the officers face an additional charge of theft and wrongful confinement.
Two of the officers face a third count of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime.
A report was received of the alleged incident where officers allegedly assaulted and threatened the 33-year-old businessman in Valelevu, Nasinu, on July 28.
It is further alleged that the officers demanded a large sum of money to secure his release.
Mr Prasad issued strict conditions that the officers needed to comply with while on bail.
The case has been adjourned to August 25.
