The Magistrate’s Court is ready to hear the bail application of a former officer from the Fiji Police Force’s Narcotics Bureau who is accused of engaging in unauthorised financial dealings.

Varinava Sabua appeared before Magistrate Vinaina Diroiroi in Suva yesterday.

The 47-year-old is alleged to have engaged in unauthorised financial dealings between January 2023 and December 2024 and obtained a corrupt gain of more than $22,000.

He is also alleged to have received a corrupt benefit in relation to the same transaction.

Mr Sabua’s bail hearing did not proceed because prosecutor, Unal Lal’s response filed on December 3 was not released to both parties by the registry until yesterday.

As a result, Mr Sabua’s lawyer, Amani Bale, sought time to respond to the State’s objection to bail.

Mr Sabua was further remanded in custody and the case adjourned to December 12.
