The Biosecurity Authority (BAF) of Fiji will undergo a reorganization and will be removed as a public enterprise from the Public Enterprises Act 2019.

Cabinet made the decision yesterday.

BAF will now be reassigned to the Minister responsible for Agriculture.

“This move is expected to result in a better utilization of resources, improved responses to outbreaks with better stakeholder collaboration, better accountability and stronger leadership,” said a Cabinet statement.

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) was established under the Biosecurity Act of December 2008.

The Biosecurity Act 2008 is the primary legislation that provides for the regulation and control of the movement of animal and plants into, out of and within Fiji. Inherent in this primary legislation are the powers to give effect to the relevant conventions of the WTO, IPPC and OIE, the provision of land and buildings for quarantine purposes, and the power to make Regulations.
