ADVERSE weather conditions in the country has resulted in the postponement of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour which was to be held at Pacific Harbour on January 13 – 14.
Fiji Volleyball Federation president Elesi Ketedromo said they had to postpone the tournament because of bad weather and flooding in the country in the past five days.
Ketedromo said they met with the event promoters, Yatu Lau Company Ltd and had rescheduled the event for March 24 – 25, next year.
“This is the first time Fiji is hosting such a world event and international and Oceania teams have confirmed their participation,” Ketedromo said.
She said teams such as Estonia and United States of America were among teams that had confirmed their participation.
The five-star structure instituted starting with the 2017 FIVB World Tour is one of the many steps taken by the FIVB to modernise and streamline its competitions in a golden period for beach volleyball on the heels of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Pacific Harbour was chosen as the venue for the world event because it lived up to its reputation as a spot for thrill seekers, offering a wide variety of activities, from surfing and shark feeding to four-wheel drive tours.
The 2017 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Major Series, 5-star, 4-star, 3-star, 2-star and 1-star.
