On August 5, 1993, under the headline “Sniffer dogs to combat trafficking of drugs”, The Fiji Times reported the presence of sniffer dogs at Nadi Airport would deter drug traffickers from the country.
The Times quoted police commissioner Phillip Arnfield as saying sniffer dogs would be located at points where cargo was handled at Nadi Airport, and that the police would be greatly helped in detecting the presence of drugs at the airport.
“A new $65,000 sniffer dog unit was officially launched on Tuesday by British Embassy charge d’affaires, David Noble,” the report said.
“The unit will have sniffer dogs trained to detect drugs.
“Meanwhile, Mr Arnfield presented Commissioner of Police commendation certificates to policemen in Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki.
“Lautoka policemen Sergeant Adi Sen and Corporal Pray Dutt received certificates for solving a manslaughter case in Tavua last year.
“Another Lautoka policeman, Constable Viliame Sukani, received a certificate for apprehending two men charged with robbery and violence.”
The report stated that in Ba, Corporal Arun Kumar and constables Gaffae Ahmed, Keshwan Naidu and Josefa Nainima received certificates for outstanding detective work in a larceny case last year.
“In Rakiraki, constables Joseph Subramani, Koro Lesikinaloku and Onisimo Natabale received certificates for solving a murder in September, 1991.”
