President Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau officiated at the opening of Fiji’s newest resort, Na Koro, in July of 1988.
An article published by this newspaper on July 18 that year, reported the multi-million-dollar resort at Lesiaceva Peninsula, Savusavu, belonged to the International Quality Inn chain.
The first phase of the resort provided 20 thatched bure accommodation with self-contained bathrooms, refrigeration and air conditioning.
Ratu Sir Penaia told guests the property’s location was “very similar to that of an idyllic tropical island village setting”.
The resort’s name in Fijian meant “the village”, which is a cohesive social unit where the pace of the day is relaxing, life is natural and people, hospitable and friendly.
“All taken together, I am certain visitors to Na Koro will experience the best alternative to the charm and tranquillity of village life,” Ratu Sir Penaia said.
He said the North had substantial potential for the development of tourism.
“If tourism is principally made up of people, places and water, I might just add that Vanua Levu has all the ingredients for the development of a successful tourist destination.
“We have equally beautiful white sandy beaches and some of the richest waters in the world. Coupled with these factors are the friendly people of the North.”
