As many as 50 bus passengers had to walk about two kilometres to catch transport after their bus ended up in a drain at Tovata in Nasinu near Suva.
According to an article published by The Fiji Times on May 19, 1990, a spokesman for the bus company, City Transport, warned there could be possible loss of life in future accidents if the road at Tovata was not upgraded.
The bus was travelling along the road at about 11am when the driver lost control after the vehicle hit a pothole and slid into a drain.
“It was due to the poor road condition,” the company spokesman said.
“We’ve lodged complaints with the Public Works Department on several occasions but there’s been no improvements.
“It’s only when there’s a major accident and there’s loss of lives that something might be done.
“Whenever it rains, the road is slippery and the potholes don’t help either.”
The spokesman said the company, however, would continue services but emphasised the need to upgrade the road.
The 50 bus passengers had to walk to the main road at Laqere to catch other buses on their journey into Suva.
