Life is full of surprises. On October 2, 1999, The Fiji Times reported a story of how Rugby World Cup debutant, Waisake Sotutu, celebrated the birth of his second son.

Happy grandmum Makereta Nakalevu was asked, and she said that it was true.

She was a proud woman.

Waisake was attending his first Rugby World Cup and just before kick-off time, his wife Adilida gave birth to a second son.

The new family member, named Kobi Tomasi Presley Sotutu, arrived at 8.11 am on Thursday at Auckland Hospital.

Their eldest son, Hoskin Colin Ryde Sotutu, was 14 months old.

“I was enjoying life and thanked God for that,” Ms Nakalevu had said from Auckland the day prior.

“It has never been better. We were looking forward to the World Cup and now this bundle of joy.”

The Tailevu grandmum said she was overjoyed with the birth of her second grandson.

But her son Waisake, who had been congratulated and carried off the ground after training by his teammates in France, said he had other things in mind.

Sotutu said from Banyuls, South France, the day prior that although it was a special occasion, he would rather celebrate later.

“Right then, it was in the back of my mind,” Sotutu said.

“The focus then was the match against Namibia. That’s why we were there.”

Sotutu said the boys were raring to get onto the field.

The match was scheduled to be shown live on Fiji One at 7am that day.
