Before jet-powered adventures became a feature along the Sigatoka River, similar thrills were already drawing visitors along the coast of Denarau.

According to an article published by The Fiji Times on Thursday, December 5, 1996, Shotover Jet Fiji was named the 1995 FTIB Exporter of the Year in the service category, marking a significant milestone for the country’s tourism sector.

The company, an extension of New Zealand tourism operator Shotover Jet Limited, established its first offshore operation in Fiji, commencing services in February 1994. Based at Port Denarau on Denarau Island near Nadi, Shotover Jet Fiji quickly earned a reputation for its high standard and professional service.

The award recognised not only these qualities but also the company’s contribution to expanding Fiji’s tourism offerings with a unique and thrilling experience.

The Fiji Trade and Investment Board (FTIB) acknowledged Shotover Jet Fiji for its outstanding contribution to the industry since its establishment.

Operating powerful jet boats through mangrove forests and out into the open ocean, the company offered high-adrenaline rides that brought passengers within a hair’s breadth of rocks and other obstacles. Skilled drivers performed full 360-degree spins within the boat’s own length, delivering what became known as the signature “Shotover Jet drivestyle.”

Despite the intensity of the experience, safety remained a priority. All drivers completed at least 120 hours of on-water training and also entertained passengers with insights into Fiji’s culture and history during each ride.

Although relatively new to Fiji’s tourism scene at the time, Shotover Jet Fiji was part of a globally recognised brand. Its parent company had built a reputation as a pioneer of commercial jet boating worldwide, with numerous accolades including the New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award and Best Visitor Attraction.

Over its 26-year history, Shotover Jet Limited had carried more than 1.5 million passengers, establishing itself as a leader in adventure tourism.

“Our New Zealand company was awarded the Tradenz Award for excellence as an exporter of services in 1994. Winning the FTIB Exporter of the Year Award in our second year in Fiji was very exciting,” said Shotover Jet Fiji manager Hillary Finnie.

The recognition underscored Fiji’s growing appeal as a destination for innovative and world-class tourism experiences.
