Ba Rugby Union 2023 Tikina Championship, a beacon of hope and unity, was launched in Nailaga Village in Ba, yesterday.

The eight tikina’s (districts) include Bulu, Magodro, Nailaga, Naloto, Qeleyalitina, Savatu, Veiyasana (Ba Town), and Yakete .

This championship will feature eight men’s teams, six women’s teams, and a youth category, promising a vibrant display of talent. Jeremy Duxbury, the BRU Strategy Planner, passionately explained, “Through the Tikina Championships, we aim to unite everyone in Ba using rugby as a unifying force.”

His words reflected the shared optimism for the journey ahead. Savatu, a village that had long been adrift in rugby’s wilderness, found a fresh start in this championship. Having been part of various rugby entities over the years, they had been without a match since 2019.

The tournament rekindled dreams for villages like Drala, Lewa, and Nagatagata, who were eager to reconnect with the sport they loved. In a significant stride towards gender inclusivity, Rooster Chicken proudly sponsored the Women’s division.

The company’s CEO, Stanley Raniga, emphasized, “Women from different parts of the globe are stepping out and showcasing their ability. Rugby is not just a game for men; it’s for all, regardless of gender. It will inspire future generations.”

The Men’s division found support from Ba Industries Limited (BIL). Mr. Vinod Patel, the visionary behind BIL, initiated the company after witnessing the devastation caused by Hurricane Bebe in 1973.

Speaking to Times Sport, he said; “Ba is a town with rugby-crazy hearts. Last week, Ba clinched the IDC cup, but our town lacks many things. Yet, we possess extraordinary sportspeople.”

As the Tikina Championship kicks off this Saturday, the picturesque landscape of Ba bears witness to a powerful story of unity, hope, and the enduring spirit of rugby.

Beyond the scores and the cheers of the crowd, it will be a testament to the unifying power of rugby, transcending backgrounds and genders, reminding us that the sport is a journey that binds us all together.
