BA football legend Julie Sami, who was a pivotal member of the team that secured six consecutive Inter District Championships, passed away at the age of 67 at Aspen Hospital yesterday.
Sami’s passion for soccer began at the age of 15 and continued until his retirement.
During his time with the Ba team, he played a crucial role in their historic golden era, helping them clinch the Lloyd Farebrother IDC Cup six times in a row from 1975 to 1980.
This impressive record of dominance was only broken by Suva in 1981.
Known for his intelligence, agility, and composure under pressure, Sami excelled as the first receiver in midfield, seamlessly linking defense and attack with his precision passing.
His athleticism and skill set him apart as a dynamic and promising player, demonstrating agility, balance, and sharp change of pace.
Sami had the privilege of playing alongside renowned Ba soccer icons such as Bale Raniqa, Inia Bola, Narend Sami, Vimlesh Singh, Sarwan Singh, the late Waisea Naicovu, the late Josetiki Kurivuti, the late Mitieli, the late Josaia Tubuna, the late Jone Nakosia, the late Farook Janeman, and the late Isimeli Nale.
His exceptional talent and leadership qualities not only inspired his teammates but also left a lasting impact on a generation of footballers and fans.
Fiji Football Association President Rajesh Patel spoke highly of Sami, describing him as one of the most accomplished midfielders in Fiji football history.
Sami’s legacy in Ba’s golden era and his contributions to the national team will forever be cherished by the football community.
“Julie Sami’s passion, discipline, and vision in the game inspired not only his teammates but an entire generation of footballers and fans,” said Patel.
”His legacy in Ba’s golden era and his contribution to the Fiji national team will never be forgotten.
”On behalf of the Fiji Football Association, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
As a mark of respect and honor, both RC Manubhai Ba FC and Navua FC will observe a minute of silence before their match at the FMF IDC 2025 today, with Ba players wearing black armbands to commemorate Sami’s extraordinary achievements.
Ba will take on Navua at 8pm at 4R Stadium, Govind Park in Ba.
