BA Methodist High School is shaping up to field a strong Under-18 side in this year’s Deans rugby competition, following the establishment of the Ba Rugby Union Youth Academy at the school.
The academy, which began this year, is aimed at strengthening junior player development in Ba and has already had a positive impact on the school’s rugby programme.
U18 coach Ioana Lewatiakana believes fans can expect a different Ba Methodist team in the Deans this season. He said the early signs were encouraging, highlighted by their recent win over Eastern Saints U18 over the weekend.
Lewatiakana said the team had only one week to regroup and prepare, but the players responded well on the field, showing discipline and commitment.
He added that the Ba Rugby Union academy currently has 32 players in its extended squad, with 20 players training under the academy programme at Ba Methodist. Players are also coming in from as far as Tavua, with some travelling from Nadi to be part of the setup.
According to Lewatiakana, the academy provides a strong platform for young players to develop and grow under proper guidance, something that will benefit both Ba Rugby and Ba Methodist High School in the long run.
When asked about Ba Methodist’s chances in the Deans competition this year, Lewatiakana said a strong campaign is very likely, given the depth of talent and the structure now in place through the academy.
