If there’s anything two-time Olympic Games gold medallist Jerry Tuwai wants, it is for Fiji to win another gold before he hangs his boots.
During an interview, Tuwai said it hurt him so much to see people talk about the team’s poor performance in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series but his eyes were already fixed on a third shot at the Paris Olympics.
“Let the loyal fans talk, the Olympics is the team’s top aim,” he said.
Despite missing out on a place in the quarter-finals, Fiji’s performance in Toulouse was good enough to secure qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Ben Gollings-coached side has qualified for the Paris Olympic Games next year. A tournament is left to be played in the series.
The Fijiana 7s failed to achieve its goal of qualifying automatically for the Olympics after a 10-5 loss to Ireland in the fifth-place semi-final.
The side will play in the Oceania qualifying tournament to book a spot for Paris next season.
Meanwhile, New Zealand wrapped up a 13th men’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title in Toulouse and followed that up with a come-from-behind 24-19 extra-time win against Argentina in the Cup final.
