Five property fires reported over weekend

Five structural fires were reported over the weekend with two cases believed to be acts of arson.

In one incident last Saturday, Ba Police Station received a report of a fire at the FSC Rarawai Mill that resulted in the damage of a conveyor belt and electrical wires.

Police said the cause and cost of damage were yet to be ascertained.

The second case – also reported on Saturday – involved the destruction of a 70-year-old woman’s home at Gaji Road in Raiwaqa.

Police believe the fire started from one of the two bedrooms where her grandson was playing.

In a separate incident, the Korolevu home of a 35-year-old hotel worker was also completely destroyed in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning.

According to police, the house was vacant at the time.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Police in Nadi also received a fire report that partially destroyed a bulk warehouse at Narewa, and with an estimated cost of damage of around $30,000.

Police also reported the arrest of a 42-year-old man who was taken into custody after he allegedly set fire to his Saravi Road home in Nadi following an argument with his wife.

Joint investigations are ongoing with the National Fire Authority.
