BEACHCOMBER is back.
After years of wandering around the world, beachcomber has finally returned home and thus the rebirth of Flotsam and Jetsam.
This has brought smiles to The Fiji Times publisher, Hank Arts.
“Welcome to the rebirth of the Flotsam and Jetsam column. At this point, I need to acknowledge my mates at the ROC Coffee Club for encouraging me to restart publishing this column, I might add that it would be best to keep well away from being involved, you just never know what might crop up,” Mr Arts said.
Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam is described as debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship’s load.
Jetsam can also be defined as people or things that have been rejected and are regarded as worthless. The column first commenced publication on November 27, 1959 and was discontinued on June 22, 2004 when the column Davui took over.
“The first columns published had some interesting inclusions that we thought might be nice to restart for January 1, 2016.
“I trust you will enjoy this publication. Wishing you all some light-hearted reading and a very happy New Year,” Mr Arts said.
Flotsam and Jetsam will be published on Monday to Saturday in The Fiji Times.
