Update: 11:28AM SOUTH Island: One person is dead after a car crash near Winchester, South Canterbury, overnight.

Police were called to the incident at around 12.05am.

New Zealand Police said only one vehicle was involved and a 34-year-old passenger in that car died.

Police said a Serious Crash Unit investigation had begun into the cause of the crash, and the death had been referred to the Coroner.
