Two men die in separate alleged drowning incidents

Fijian Police have reported two men allegedly drowned in the Western Division in separate incidents in the last 48 hours.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the first report was received from Togovere in Tavua where the body of a 52-year-old villager was found floating in the river a few metres from the shore.

She said the man was reported missing when he failed to return home from collecting sand last Friday.

A post mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain cause of death.

In the second incident also reported yesterday, the body of a 61-year-old caretaker from Teidamu was recovered from the Teidamu Creek in Lautoka.

Ms Naisoro said the circumstances surrounding his death was being investigated and a post mortem examination would be conducted to establish the cause of death.

Investigations are continuing into both cases.

The national drowning death toll stands at six compared to nine for the same period last year.
