Young woman drowns in Lautoka

A 23-year-old woman from Vakabuli in Lautoka is believed to be Fiji’s latest drowning victim.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the victim had gone to bathe in the Vakabuli River yesterday morning when the alleged incident occurred.

“When she failed to return home after some time, a search was conducted where her body was found floating in the river,” Ms Naisoro said.

She said a post mortem examination will be conducted as investigations continue.

The national drowning death toll stands at 38 compared to 29 for the same period last year.

“We are urging the public to be vigilant and take necessary safety precautions if you’re intending on going for a picnic or will be involved in any water-related activities today.

“We anticipate a lot of families to be taking advantage of today’s public holiday at popular picnic spots and while Police will be moving around we can’t be everywhere and are urging everyone to prioritise their safety.”
