RBF: Personal remittance inflows have been strong

The Reserve Bank of Fiji says personal remittance inflows have been strong, increasing by 6.4 per cent in the year to November to $572.8million.

According to the central bank’s economic review for the month-ended December 2020, it noted that around $52.0m was received in the month of November.

The RBF stated that tourism earnings, on the other hand, declined significantly by an annual 79.8 per cent up to the third quarter of this year.

Cumulative to September, $311.3million worth of tourism earnings was recorded, of which only $3.1m was received in the third quarter.

In its economic review for the November month-end, the RBF had stated that on a cumulative basis, personal remittances rose by 7.3 per cent to $521.0m in the first 10 months of the year.

And for October alone, personal remittances totalled a record $69.0m, an increase of 29.5 per cent over the previous month and an increase of 58.7 per cent over October in 2019.

The central bank had stated then that overall, remittances had performed well above expectations and contributed positively to foreign reserves.
