THE best players from Fiji will be selected to play in the new OFC Pro-League from March next year.
Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf says plans are in the pipeline for the new competition that is said to drastically improve the standard of football in the Oceania region.
The professional league was approved by world soccer’s governing body, FIFA in Paris last year followed high level talks on the future of football in Oceania.
“The Fiji FA Board has already approved that Fiji will have a team but at the moment the timeline is very tight, and we are working on it and hopefully we’ll set up a separate committee to look after that part, it’s a professional set-up and once all the names are submitted and approved then we will make an announcement,” Yusuf stated.
“All the best players in the country can be part of this professional league because it’s going to be two matches per week, and they’ll have to move out and play seven countries in the OFC region.
It’s something like Super Rugby.”
During the top-level discussion in Paris, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said; “The formation of the Oceania Professional League is a fundamental part of that mandate.”
In March last year, OFC president Lambert Maltock stated the OFC Pro-League is a much-needed platform that will enable teams from Oceania to be competitive at the international stage.
