THE year 2024 has been a fruitful one for Fiji Amateur Boxing and its national coach Cam Todd.
Todd has done a lot to elevate the sport since his appointment as the head coach in May last year.
Building from the 2023 IBA Men’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Tashkent to the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, Todd along with the members of the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association worked tirelessly to give their boxers more time in the ring domestically and in overseas.
While management worked on getting their house in order, Todd worked with boxers and negotiated with other nations to bring their international experience to Fiji.
Both of this was achieved this year.
“Domestically I was really happy that I was able to get 10 international competitions in Fiji for our boxers. We had teams from Australia and New Zealand here this year and that’s been amazing,” he said.
Topping his list of achievements was his team’s outing and achievement at the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti.
“The standout was my junior youth teams in Tahiti, taking 11 boxers there and getting five gold, five silver and a bronze that was history making. The year before Fiji got, I think two bronzes so turn around like that be one of the top teams there and these guys are so talented and they haven’t even started yet,” he added.
Todd is also gradually answering the call of encouraging more women participation in boxing.
“The other highlight is the number of female boxers from when we started. We started with two from last year and now we have 15 to 20 women boxing from 10-year-old upwards.”
Todd is anticipating a bigger 2025 boxing season ahead with plans already in the works of overseas competitions to send their teams to.
