Labasa and Savusavu town’s chairman of administrators Ami Kohli has called on members of the public to be cautious of impersonators.
This follows his own experience last Wednesday in which someone created a Facebook account using Mr Kohli’s name and photos and asked friends for money.
He has lodged a report with the police.
“My friends received messages from this FB account asking them for money because I was busy in court and would return the money by afternoon,” Mr Kohli said.
“People need to be careful. My friends who received these messages then contacted me to ask and I was shocked.
“So I am warning people – beware of these types of incidents because some fall victims as they believe in it.”
Mr Kohli said he had received about 15 phone calls over the past two days from people wanting to clarify the FB post and whether it was genuine.
“I received a call from Taveuni from a man saying that he will deposit money into another lawyer’s account because they had a case but it was a total lie,” he said.
“I am aware of reports that involves M-PAiSA accounts of people who pretend to have blocked accounts in an attempt to get the secret pins.
“It’s really sad and I am asking people, as administrator, to be careful and always check first with those involved,” Mr Kohli said.
